Overview
Zinsser Cover Stain is a solvent-based, all-purpose primer, sealer, and stain killer, ideal for use on interior and exterior surfaces. One of Zinsser's best exterior primers for wood as it's highly flexible and resists cracking and peeling. It’s also one of the only solvent-based primers that can be used with all decorative topcoats even water-based products. Cover stain is also effective at permanently covering stains of all kinds including nicotine and water stains to give you a blemish-free topcoat.

Preparation
Always ensure the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dust, algae, fungi or moss. Also ensure the product is free from excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mould or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion.
- Always wash the surface with a household cleaner, appropriate cleaning solution, or solvent
- Always ensure to remove loose or flaking material
- Sand any remaining paint to a smooth surface
- Sand exterior wood with a 80-100 grit sandpaper
- When sealing a stain always attempt to remove as much of the stain as possible prior to application by washing, sanding, scraping etc
- To remove mould, treat area with Spot prime knots and sap streaks with before priming the whole surface
Application
Before applying stir the product thoroughly and test a small area.
- Zinsser Cover Stain does not require thinning
- Stir well before application
- Only apply when temperature range is between 5°– 32°C, allow to come to room temperature before use
- Use in a well ventilated area avoiding high humidity
- Apply one coat with a brush, roller or sprayer
- For best results prime the entire surface
- If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary
Aerosol Application
- Shake can vigorously until ball inside can rattles
- Turn can upside down and continue shaking for one minute, shake occasionally during use
- Spray 10”-12” from object with short dusting strokes
- Over-coatable after 30 minutes
- To clean spray for future use, turn can upside down and spray until clear gas is emitted
